William Stacey. I challenge you to think if you feel that your life is making a difference in others. Do you push yourself to the limit of your capacity? Do you wonder if what you do affects others for the better…even if at the cost of giving your own life? These young men help me to keep my perspective as to what is important in life. This young man lived half my years. Yet he accomplished more in his short 23 years than I will ever impact upon others. Some will be offended that I say this…but I don’t care. For what these young men & women do I will give my all until my last gasp of air to ensure the work they do is not in vain.

JOINT BASE LEWIS-MCCHORD — When the 4th Stryker brigade returned home from Iraq last year, the soldiers were met with smiles and warm hugs.

Missing from their ranks was Sgt. Derrick Kirkland. The husband and father had been sent home from Iraq five months earlier after trying to commit suicide three times.

“The doctors at Madigan (Army Hospital), for some reason after three suicide attempts in a matter of a couple of weeks, rated Kirkland as low-risk for suicide,” said Army veteran Mike Prysner.

Fellow unit members say Kirkland returned to his rear detachment unit at JBLM where he was allegedly called a liar and a coward.

“After mocking him on a Friday night, he was sent to a room by himself, which is complete contradiction to anybody who has any amounts of common sense,” said fellow soldier Kevin Baker. “He was placed by himself, and he was found Sunday morning. He’d hung himself in a closet.”

Kirkland’s supporters say the Army cleared itself in an internal investigation, but they want the investigation reopened.

“It is our assertion that Sgt. Kirkland was killed by the criminal negligence provided by the U.S. Army here at Fort Lewis,” Prysner said.

A JBLM spokesman called Kirkland’s death a tragedy, but said he can’t comment on the details except to say the military takes suicide prevention extremely seriously.

But Kirkland’s supporters say the military’s efforts are falling short while the horrors of war are taking a toll on our troops. Military veterans say soldier suicides have reached epidemic proportions, and more prevention is needed.

“More soldiers are killing themselves each day than dying in combat. That right there says that something is very wrong with the system right now, of (the) mental health care in the military,” said Army veteran Josh Simpson.

Kirkland’s supporters say it’s going to take public pressure on the military to get changes. Toward that end, Kirkland’s mother and several fellow active-duty soldiers are going to speak out Friday night near the base, hoping to catch the military’s attention.

Tacoma residents are mourning a recent Lincoln High School graduate who died in a training accident in Afghanistan this week. The Army has not yet released details on how Pvt. Neil Turner lost his life. His father on Facebook today wrote “My son, Neil, was killed during a training exercise yesterday in Afghanistan. When I get all the findings, I will post them.”Leland Turner’s announcement rippled through a community of east Tacoma families who watched Neil grow up. He was the oldest of four brothers, and neighbors saw him keeping an eye out for his siblings.“He gave his brothers space because they were boys, but he was the one who would corral them,” remembered Tami Scheidt, who lives next door to the Turner family.“It’s been really hard for all of us,” she said. “He’s gone through some transitions in life, and he hit his late teens and he just grew up. He starts making good choices, and then this happens.”Matt Zimmerman, 23, said Turner often talked about joining the Army while they attended Lincoln together. Turner enlisted a little more than a year ago and deployed early this fall.

“It seemed to me that he loved it. All the pictures I’ve seen of him deployed, he was smiling,” Zimmerman said.

Zimmerman remembered Turner as a popular student and a reliable friend.

“He was always that guy you could count on,” Zimmerman said.

Younger teens in the neighborhood looked up to Turner, too.

“Neil definitely left an imprint on my heart,” said Lincoln High School senior Ransom Hatch. “He’s one person who can’t be forgotten.”

Hatch said his older brother spent many hours fixing cars with Neil. He remembered the soldier constantly riding a bicycle around the neighborhood.

“He was always down to try a new adventure.”

Hatch said he saw Turner a few weeks ago when Turner came home to Tacoma for his leave. Turner appeared to be in good spirits.

“He was still the same old Neil,” Hatch said.

The Defense Department typically waits a day or two to release information about a service member’s death and military record. Information on Turner’s Facebook page shows that he was a private assigned to Fort Bliss, Texas.

Operation Bald Eagle is about serving our military in their time of need. We currently serve more than 500 troops with care packages throughout the year. This means with a smaller van that we currently have we must make several trips to the Post Office to drop off packages. Thanksgiving we collected enough dinners for 250+ families. Christmas we have also collected more than enough toys for over 250 families. This all adds up to more space needed to transport supplies. Increased fuel costs and further wear and tear on our vehicle. As well as limiting our ability to respond at all in some circumstances. We also pick up donations and often need a larger van or must deny the donation altogether. In 2012 we are looking to raise funds to making this a reality. If you would like to donate funds to support this effort or are able to donate a vehicle please contact us. Your tax deductible donation can make a real difference in the lives of our military families when they need it the most.
